4 Different Types of Roofs

Knowing the right type of roofing for your home can help it last longer, and help you stay safer. From gables to flats, here are the most common types of roofs and their recommended materials.

Gable

A gable roof is among the most common for residential structures. It is a triangular shaped roof that slants down from the peak of your home. Traditional in appearance, it’s useful for running rainwater and snow to the gutters. You’ll commonly find asphalt shingles on a gable roof due to their affordability and design variety, but you can also choose other materials, including wood and metal.

Flat

Roofers offer flat roofs mostly for commercial properties, although some forward-thinking homes sport this type too. The low-pitch stands in stark contrast to other residential homes, which are typically higher. Because of the pitch, maintenance is prioritized more often. For maximum protection, we recommend metal for your home. It is a flat-roof favorite and adds a modern style to your architecture.

Hip

A hip roof is like a gable, slanting at a lower angle. The roof structure goes down all four sides of your home, rather than the two in gables. The structure has better integrity, thanks to its unique shape. Because a hip roof can suffer from pooling, we recommend slate for strong, low-maintenance protection to avoid such an occurrence.

Mansard

Mansards are popular for their double slope appearance. They look like hip roofs with a medium or low pitch, which sharply drops to a higher sloped section. It’s popular for homeowners who want a larger living space. For this kind of roof, we recommend using asphalt shingles for easy roof repair and maintenance.
