What to Prioritize After Your Home Gets Hit by a Storm

The day immediately following a severe storm is a tumultuous time, and can be a challenge for even the most headstrong homeowners. The key to dealing with such situations is knowing which things to prioritize. As one of the Delaware roofers that provides assistance with storm repairs, Homecraft® Inc. shares a few tips on what you should do after a storm.

Safety First

Keeping your family safe should be priority number one, so first secure a temporary shelter for your family. Always assume that downed power lines still have power, so keep your distance from them and notify the utility company. When inspecting your home, wear safety boots and keep an eye out for hazards like broken glass and exposed nails. Shut off the main gas line, and notify the gas company if you suspect a gas leak. Pack food, clothing and other essentials for your family and have them stay with relatives or at a hotel.

Contact Your Roofer

Save the number of your trusted roofing contractor in your contacts list as early as now. Once you have secured your family’s safety, call a contractor as soon as possible. You’ll need temporary roofing set up to protect your property, and you’ll need proper documentation for the insurance adjuster before the volunteers and the fire department start with their clearing operations.

Avoid what are known as “storm chasers,” unscrupulous contractors who are more adept at providing sub-par repair work and camouflaging it so you won’t notice the quality until later. You’re also less likely to get a proper payout from your insurance provider with these “contractors.”

Homecraft Inc. provides proper emergency roofing repairs, and have the experience working with insurance adjusters in getting homeowners the insurance payout their home deserves.

Talk to Your Insurance Provider

We recommend reporting the situation to your insurance provider immediately after contacting your roofing contractor of choice. The idea is to make sure they receive an accurate assessment of the damage, and have them process the necessary paperwork in as short a time as possible. We understand that by this point, you’ll have your plate already full, but the more you stay focused, the faster you can get your home back to the way it was – or maybe even better, with the right roofing contractor.
