Different Signs That Say You Need New Siding

Getting new siding is a big decision that many homeowners consider as a last resort. Replace siding too soon and you waste money, replace it too late and you’ll end up paying too much for unnecessary repairs. Here’s a quick guide made by our roofers to help you figure out the different signs that say you need new siding.

Big Gaps Between the Panels

The siding must have a waterproof surface to prevent moisture from getting to the more vulnerable parts of your home. Gaps can appear because of misalignments in the siding panels or general deterioration. If the gaps are big enough that repairs seem impractical, you’re better off getting new siding.

Cracks and Holes

Cracks and holes will create weak points in the siding’s waterproof surface just like the seams we previously mentioned. Even worse, cracks and holes are even more visible, and can ruin the look of your home. According to siding and roofing experts, minor signs of damage can be fixed by replacing a few panels, but severe cases are often due for a total siding replacement.

Blisters

A common sign found in vinyl and coated siding materials, bubbles and blisters are small bumps caused by moisture and air penetrating the top layer of the siding panels. Over time, the bumps can collapse on themselves, forming blisters. This can make the panels themselves vulnerable to moisture damage, and major blistering will almost always require a total replacement.

Aesthetic Issues

In some cases, siding panels have to be replaced because of cosmetic reasons. This usually happens after a roof or window update. Siding and roof repair experts say that the old siding might detract from the overall look of the home, and it may even be the best opportunity to upgrade the siding along with the rest of the home’s exterior.
