A Homeowner’s Guide to French Patio Doors

French doors add more than just beauty to any home. Homecraft® Inc. shares a quick look at what French doors are, what they are best used for and how they can be used to make any home look and feel better than before.

What Are French Doors?

French doors are traditionally a pair of doors of varying sizes. They are comprised of glass panels. Also known as French windows, these huge doors swing open inwardly or outwardly to allow passage.

Modern French Doors come in various designs and use a variety of materials. They can even be customized so they will look good with the home’s vinyl siding.

What Are They Best Used For and When Should You Use Them

French doors are best used in areas where natural lighting is lacking but needed. They are also best used in homes that need additional ventilation. They serve to connect two rooms to each other and serve as dividers that separate them from each other when needed. They also work great as patio doors.

Making the Most of a French Door

French doors are very versatile and can be used in many parts of the home. Modern technologies ensure that the glass panes in these doors are durable, able to prevent outside heat and cold from leaking in, able to keep indoor warmth or cold inside the home, and also able to protect the home from intruders.

That said, here are some ways to maximize their use:

  • For homes with small spaces: sliding French doors or French doors with one hinged panel and a fixed sidelight are the way to go.

  • For homeowners concerned about privacy: using opaque glass will make sure that natural light enters in, but won’t allow for visibility.

  • For homeowners who love staying outdoors: it’s best to use new out-swinging French doors to connect the home with the backyard, patio or porch. It’s also best to color them so they can complement the siding.

  • For homes with multiple rooms: instead of walls, French doors can serve as dividers that can reduce or expand room space.
