The 3 Kinds of Asphalt Roofing Shingles

Asphalt roofing shingles are by far the most popular roofing material currently in use in the United States, and for good reason. They are inexpensive, durable, widely available, easy to install and come in a wide array of different colors and styles. They are a favorite among roofers and homeowners alike so if you are building a new home from scratch or are looking to replace an aging roof, here’s what you need to know about the three types of asphalt roofing shingles currently available on the market today.

Three-Tab Shingles

Introduced in the 1980s, three-tab or strip shingles are the most basic asphalt shingles available. They consist of a single layer of asphalt and have a flat appearance that resembles slate. Since they are made of a single layer, they generally weigh less and, therefore, also cost less to manufacture and install. Three-tab shingles are the most common type of asphalt shingles in use today.

Dimensional Shingles

Roofers also refer to dimensional shingles as architectural or laminate shingles. Think about them as the mid-range option. Dimensional shingles typically have two or more layers that are fused together giving them a multi-dimensional look that is designed to replicate more expensive roofing materials such as wood shake and slate tiles.

Luxury Shingles

As the name implies, luxury shingles are the highest-quality shingles that are available to homeowners. They offer a more premium look and protection that can greatly increase your home’s overall value and curb appeal. Needless to say, this type of shingles are the most expensive but they are well worth the investment as they can last upwards of 50 years under the right conditions.
