Understanding Popular Siding Terms for Your Exterior Redo

Siding replacement, like most home improvement projects, has its own jargon or lingo. For sure, your choice of contractor will use certain terms that you may not be familiar with. Homecraft® Inc. shares some of them below.

Buttlock

In a typical vinyl installation, this refers to the bottom edge of a panel. It faces against the nailing slots and locks another preceding panel that was already installed to prevent the whole siding from moving around.

Face

This simply refers to the front part of the siding panel that’s about to be installed. This also refers to the visible side after installation.

Furring

This is a strip attached to even out a surface before installing the siding. Furring strips are only used if some parts of the exterior surface aren’t perfectly flat. This is also sometimes referred to as “strapping,” and to “fur” a surface means to apply the strips on the surface.

Why You Should Work With a Professional

A complete siding replacement is a big investment that should be planned carefully. Siding makes up a big part of your home’s exterior, so if you take the DIY approach, you can get overwhelmed. To ensure your investment is handled wisely, you need to work with a siding contractor who has the expertise to get the job done properly.

When looking for a contractor for your siding project, be sure they have the right training and experience in installing different materials. They should also offer quality siding options that match your home’s architecture as well as keep your home safe and secure from the natural elements.

If you’re browsing for different materials for your exterior renovation, why not consider our CedarMAX® insulated vinyl siding? It combines rigid foam EPS insulation with our Super Polymer vinyl siding so that you get exceptional beauty, durability and energy efficiency for your home.
