What Is SHGC and Why Does It Matter?

If you decide to get replacement windows, there are many important decisions that you’ll need to make. From style to finish, size to placement – these are all things that need careful consideration. But one important feature that homeowners sometimes do not pay too much attention to is the SHGC rating.

While it may sound pretty technical, it is actually quite simple once you understand the basics. In today’s post, trusted siding contractor, Homecraft® Inc. explains why it is important to get windows with an SHGC rating that works for your home.

What Is Solar Heat Gain Coefficient?

Solar heat gain coefficient, or SHGC, represents the amount of solar radiation that is admitted through your windows, doors or skylights – either directly when the rays of the sun hit these components, or indirectly when radiation is absorbed and subsequently released in your home’s interior.

Why Is SHGC Important?

Solar heat gain, being the primary mode of energy transfer through most fenestration products, can lead to overheating in the summer and provide free heat in the winter. It’s essential to consider climate, the sun’s direction and typical shading conditions at your building’s location to balance and maximize the potential benefits.

How to Measure SHGC

SHGC is often rated on a scale of zero to one. Zero means heat is completely reflected or absorbed by the window, while one means every bit of heat passes through. Window and siding replacement experts say that a window should have an SHGC of around .3 to .6 to be considered efficient enough for the average household.

Benefits of SHGC to Your Home

1. A Cozy and Comfortable Home

The SHGC can help you make excellent decisions in selecting the most appropriate type of windows for each room in your home, and therefore, prevent overheating during the summer and freezing temperatures in long winter months.

2. Protection From Harmful UV Rays

Windows without proper glazing and suboptimal SHGC ratings can put you at risk of the downside of UV rays. In addition, your furniture, especially those made of wood and leather, can also fade out, look weathered, and worn out faster when they are exposed to harsh, direct sunlight on a daily basis.

3. Lower Energy and Heating Bills

By making the SHGC rating work for your advantage, you’ll be able to optimize your home’s overall energy efficiency and cut back your energy consumption as well as your utility bills effectively.
