The Most Popular Window Styles

While it used to be common for homeowners to stick to one type of window even when they replaced their old windows, modern homeowners now are more open to experimenting with different styles of windows. It’s not uncommon for a homeowner to explore replacement windows that are a far cry from the style they are replacing.

If you’re in the market for a new style of windows, here is a list to give you some ideas on what you should consider:

Casement Windows

Casement windows typically have side hinges that allow them to swing out. Many casement window designs have large glass areas for maximum daylighting. The views are uninterrupted by muntins and other parts of the frame. When you open them, casement windows are great for airing out a room. When closed, they provide an effective seal against air leaks, so if you choose the right casement windows, you’ll enjoy more energy efficiency.

Double-Hung Windows

Most American homes are equipped with double- or single-hung windows. A double-hung window provides better ventilation than a single-hung window. Opening both sashes halfway provides a natural flow of air in and out of the room. A single-hung window differs in that the upper sash is fixed. The classic look of single- or double-hung vinyl windows works for almost any home.

Picture Windows

Completely inoperable, picture windows are perfect for areas where airflow is not a concern, but they can also be combined with operable windows in rooms where airflow matters. If you’re shooting for a large view of the outdoors and plenty of daylighting only, then picture windows are your best option.

Bay and Bow Windows

If you’re interested in angles, or in adding even a small floor area when you install new windows, take a look at bay or bow windows. These windows jut out from the home’s main architecture. You can use them in kitchens for additional breakfast space, or in rooms where you’d like to spend some time relaxing or reading by the window. If that’s not your thing, you can use the large sill for decorating your indoors with some potted plants.
