Windows: Why They’re Drafty and 4 Solutions You Can Apply

While they may not seem like it, your home’s windows are a vital part of your home. This is because not only do they increase your home’s overall curb appeal but they also improves your home’s ventilation and energy efficiency at the same time. Unfortunately, you may notice that there are times when your vinyl windows are drafty, baffling some homeowners as a result.

If your windows are drafty, experts say it’s possible that they’ve shrunk, have worn out weatherstripping, or sometimes, are just old, causing problems for you and your home in the process. Thankfully, however, experts say that there are a few solutions you can apply to resolve your window’s draft issues. These solutions include:

  1. Install a Draft Snake – If you notice that the source of the draft is coming from the bottom of your window, consider buying a foam and fabric draft snake kit. Simply cut the snake and slip the washable cover on it before placing the snake on the sill to temporarily solve your window’s draft problems until a more permanent solution can be put in place.
  2. Use a Shrink Film – Alternatively, you can also consider using a shrink film on your windows instead of a drain snake. To use a shrink film, you simply need to apply it on your window with double-sided tape before heating it up with a hair dryer. Once you’ve done so, the drafts should be sealed, preventing your home from losing air and causing your monthly energy bills to spike up. If you need to remove it come spring, on the other hand, use rubbing alcohol to peel it off without ruining the paint.
  3. Replace Loose or Missing Glazing – On the other hand, if you’re looking for something long term, you’re more than free to have an expert replace the loose or missing glazing of your windows. Since the glazing putty of your windows can crack and fail over time, it’ll have to be replaced every now and then. However, while you can replace the putty on your own, you should avoid doing so to prevent your window from sustaining further damage. Instead, enlist the services of a expert to get the job done.
  4. Finally, if none of the aforementioned solutions worked for your window, it’s likely that it’s time you have them replaced. This is especially needed if your windows are already a few decades old. Similar to replacing the loose or missing glazing, be sure to hire a window replacement professional to install your new windows. That way, the replacement process can be completed faster and more efficiently.
