4 Ways Skylights Help Improve Green Living

Skylights provide natural lighting to parts of the home where windows can’t. In today’s post, skylight and replacement windows contractor Homecraft Inc. shares another benefit of skylights that you may not know about: making your home more eco-friendly.

1. Skylights Help Reduce Reliance on Electrical Lighting — If you have to use electrical lighting in certain parts of your home during the day just to keep them adequately lit, you need a way to allow natural light into these areas. While LED lighting has made indoor lighting more affordable, sustainable and energy-efficient, skylights provide an unlimited source of natural daytime lighting. Areas that are too tight even for skylights can benefit from solar tubes, also known as sun tunnels.

2. Controlled Lighting — Skylights allow more control for natural room lighting, thanks to retractable shades and skylight covers, which function much like window treatments for vinyl windows. You won’t have to worry about the amount of glare that sunlight will cast on surfaces like on computer monitors, or how it would make the room too bright if one wants to sleep in.

3. Passive Heating — In addition to lighting, skylights can help make your home more comfortable during cold seasons, as it allows heat from the sun into your home. This can help reduce your home’s indoor heating requirements, which helps improve your heating system’s longevity, lower your annual utility bills and make your home more eco-friendly. If you prefer not to let heat from the sun into your home, you can choose skylights with low Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) ratings.

4. Improved Sustainability — The idea behind sustainable home improvements is it should prolong the service life of your home, or at least parts of your home. We have described above how skylights can reduce your home’s reliance on energy from the grid through natural lighting and allowing heat from the sun into your home. Also, the fewer light bulbs you use, the less waste material is generated by your house.
