Signs That You Need New Windows

Windows are quite communicative when it comes to revealing problems. Unlike other parts of your home, they don’t hide issues and they tell you when something’s wrong right away. Homecraft discusses what your windows are saying when they do the following:

When They Sweat Inside

Double-pane replacement windows contain an insulating gas in between the sheets of glass to reduce heat loss. The moment they fog up inside, it means there’s a seal failure and a gas leakage. There wouldn’t be any interior condensation if there’s no gap the moisture could use to get in.

Between-the-glass condensation is bad news because it indicates that the unit is no longer an effective thermal barrier. When the moist air begins to replace the insulating gas, your window then becomes a regular, inefficient unit.

When They Are Hard To Operate

Sometimes, it feels like it would take two people to open or close your windows. The usual suspect is a swollen framing material, usually because of changes in temperature or humidity. Modern windows are equipped with advanced mechanisms that allow them to operate smoothly all year round. If your units are old enough to have obsolete parts, then you should strongly consider tackling new wood window installation.

When They Let The Rain In

Water leakage is a question of weathertightness. The unit may just not be properly closed, so check the lock first to ensure a tight seal. If the rain still gets in, the leakage could be due to a roof or siding problem.

When They Let in Drafts When Closed

Operating windows normally allow a slight amount of air infiltration because they never truly seal the gap between the sash and frame completely on closing. If you feel noticeable drafts when they’re closed, though, faulty sealing or bad weatherstripping is the likely cause. If your units are drafty or particularly old, consider upgrading to weathertight vinyl windows.
